NPO’s financial management is very different than a for-profit business.

Due to tight budgeting, limited resources, and because of restricted or contracted funding, it’s easy for NPOs to make mistakes when handling their finances.

So, here are 3 common financial mistakes NPO often make

Common Financial Mistakes NPOs Make

Failing to work with a financial professional

this is the first mistake an NPO tends to make. They have a bad habit of thinking they can handle it because “it can’t be that hard, so why invest in a financial professional” – WRONG!!!!

Truth is, it CAN be complex & YES, you should invest in one ASAP. Having a financial professional, such as a Financial Consultant or a CPA, will help with having accurate & up-to-date books, auditing, cash flow info & planning for your NPO’s future. We recommend outsourcing; hiring a full-time staff member requires a lot of resources.

Recording financial data incorrectly

when it comes to recording financial data, it’s crucial that everything is correct & matches up between your different information sources. Of course, mistakes can happen – we are humans. However, the important thing is that those errors are caught fast & that they don’t stem from a lack of understanding.

So, when it comes to recording financial data, you need an experienced & effective nonprofit bookkeeper to minimize mistakes & catch any errors that may occur.

Forgetting to record financial information

WHAT? Yup, it has happened. Although it doesn’t happen too often, it does happen & it can cause a big mess when it does.

This is why it’s so important for your NPO to have experienced financial team members working with you. Having access & outsourcing to a nonprofit bookkeeper or CPA can significantly help minimize these mistakes.

NPOs, especially startups, tend to make financial mistakes. It may not be a great deal to make a small mistake here & another small one over there – we can learn from it. But, when there are lots of them, that’s another story & these can be avoided.

Having a nonprofit financial professional is the first step to avoiding these mistakes. Having up-to-date, accurate financial info & knowing where your NPO stands financially at any given moment is key to moving forward & growing your NPO.
